Award winning actor Emilie Ullerup continues her successful television career as the alarmingly beautiful Ashley Magnus, a tough-as-nails skilled fighter of paranormal creatures, on the ground breaking series Sanctuary.
Since moving from her home in Denmark, Ullerup has been dedicated to her passion for acting. After graduating from high school in Copenhagen, she moved to Vancouver, BC to pursue acting as a career at the Vancouver Film School. Ullerup graduated from VFS in 2005 and quickly landed lead roles in a number of television series.
“It makes you vulnerable, keeps you humble,
and to me, that is beautiful.”
Her first major role was as Julia Prynne on the hit show Battlestar Galactica. Other TV credits include J-Pod, Undercover, Blood Ties and Converse Contest. It was her portrayal of Kaitlin Joyce in J-Pod that garnered her ‘Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series’ at the 2008 Leo Awards, which celebrate excellence in the British Columbia film and television industry.
Ullerup recalls it was a role in a second grade play that made her realize she wanted to become an actor. She played “The Sun”, but knew everyone else’s lines. And mouthed them all as the play went on. She has since been told that’s generally frowned upon and assures her cast-mates that she really doesn’t do that anymore.
Before making a living in television, Ullerup did what most up-and-coming actors do and took work that paid the bills. One of her more notable jobs was at Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park in Copenhagen. The position? Balloon blower-upper. She claims that her payslip had a more technical name, but as she explains, “There’s really no need to make it more elaborate. I put helium in balloons. That’s it. I was very popular with kids though!”
Inspired by people who express themselves without reservation, Ullerup is conscious to challenge herself to do the same. “It makes you vulnerable, keeps you humble, and to me, that is beautiful.”
The multi-lingual Ullerup can travel with ease, especially since she speaks four languages: English, Danish, Swedish and Vietnamese. She spent many of her teenage years in Vietnam, a corner of the world she cherishes. Ullerup loves being outdoors and has been known to hit the basketball court in her time off. Enjoying the west coast lifestyle, Ullerup currently resides in Vancouver.
